Burn Prevention: Keep the Family Safe in the Kitchen and Bathroom

Burn Prevention

Burn injuries are too common in the home鈥攅specially in the kitchen and bathroom. In those spaces, scald injuries are the biggest concern. There are things you can do to keep yourself鈥攁nd your children鈥攕afe.

In the Kitchen

  1. Make sure the stove is secured to the ground
  2. Use dry hot pads to handle pans
  3. Always have pot handles turned inward and use back burners first
  4. Keep appliance cords out of reach of children
  5. Cover electrical outlets
  6. Never cook while holding a child. Always keep them a safe distance from heat sources.

In the Bathroom

  1. Lower the temperature on the hot water heater to 120 degrees
  2. Check the temperature of the water with your wrist or elbow before placing a child in the bath
  3. Never leave a child unattended in the bathtub
  4. Keep appliances, like curling irons and hair dryers, away from the bath or shower
